Saving Water

Water leftover at the end of lunchtimes is poured directly into a special ‘lunchtime watering can’. This is then taken straight outside to water all the pots and planters in the front playground!

Gardening
The entire Eco-Committee transformed a set of flower beds outside the new hall. Old plants and dead leaves were removed and composted. Compost was dug into the soil. The girls planted up the beds, creating a really attractive entrance area!

Book Sale
Well done to some of the girls in the Lower Six who held a book sale in aid of Sport Relief. They raised over £100. What a brilliant way to re-use books!

The Water Hippos have Arrived!
Learning how to save water is central to learning about learning about a sustainable lifestyle. Your local water authority will probably offer water hippos free of charge. Find out! We have added a water saving hippo to most of our cisterns, saving one litre for every flush!!

RHS Campaign for School Gardening
Moorfield school has joined the campaign. Its aim is that by 2012, 80% of UK primary schools will be providing their pupils with hands-on learning opportunities in school grounds to grow plants and garden sustainably. We are working through the campaign’s five benchmarking stages. Look out for our certificates on the ‘Grounds and Gardening’ notice board. To find out what we have to do to complete all five stages visit www.rhs.org.uk/schoolgardening (login moorfield).

Ancient Tree Hunt
Forms four and five are involved in the Woodland Trust’s ‘Ancient Tree Hunt’. Have a look on their web site, www.ancient-tree-hunt.org.uk.

Can you find the photos of the Stubham Oak in Ilkley, uploaded by two members of Form Five?

Form Four have been busy measuring the girth (2.86 metres) and height of Moorfield’s majestic Deodar Cedar (also known as the Tree of God).  Their information and a photograph can now be found on the ancient tree hunt web site – have a look!

Mixed Native Species Hedge

Form Four have planted a mixed native species hedge (Hazel, Hawthorn, Buckthorn, Dogwood, Dogrose and Holly). The girls will monitor the growth
of the 10 metre long hedge, learning more about biodiversity and habitats. The plants were donated by the Woodland Trust as part of their 'Tree For All' campaign. Trees and hedge plants are on offer to all schools. Look at their web site for more information www.treeforall.org.uk

British Potato Council

Every form is taking part in the British Potato Council's national school's potato growing competition. The potato plants are looking magnificent – we just hope the potatoes are growing too!  See the web site for more information and a fun children's section www.potatoesforschools.org.uk

African Bag Gardens
As part of the school’s African theme week, girls in years 5 and 6 created two bag gardens. With the help of a superb DVD from the organisation
Send a Cow’, pupils learnt about the hardships faced by families in many African countries. We hope to harvest a variety of crops from our bag
gardens in the summer. If one of the gardens is impressive enough we may even enter it into the national bag garden competition! Watch this space for updates.

Save the Albatross Campaign
We are collecting foreign and British Postage stamps
for the RSPB save the Albatross Campaign. Please send your used stamps to school. They should
have a very small border around them. Thank you!

Alan Titchmarsh Visit
Alan Titchmarsh came to see what Ilkleys first Eco School had achieved. He was really impressed! “The work you are doing is so important and I am glad that it’s received with such excitement and enjoyment by the children. When I see the sorts of things you have achieved and how receptive and enthusiastic the children are, it reminds me why I do the job I do.”

Kitchen Garden
Every form in the school has taken over a section of the garden. We are growing carrots, a variety of beans, rhubarb, sunflowers, cornflowers, onions, beetroot, cabbages, salad vegetables, strawberries and a pumpkin!

Carbon Detectives
Moorfield has registered with the Carbon Detectives, a DCSF project. Year five girls are in charge of the project which will provide the school with it’s carbon footprint. What ever we score, the aim will be to reduce it!

RSPB’s Climate Action Awards
We are taking part in the RSPB’s Climate Action Awards. The girls are in the process of completing a set of challenges at home. When completed they will receive a certificate and stickers from the RSPB.
